   The same files and rules Google Fonts served for
   family=Newsreader:ital,opsz,wght@0,6..72,300..600;1,6..72,300..500
   (v26, fetched 2026-10-22), with only the URLs changed. Serving them from our
   own domain takes two third-party servers off every page load: the browser no
   longer has to connect to fonts.googleapis.com, wait for its stylesheet, then
   connect to fonts.gstatic.com before it can start on the font itself.

   That stylesheet blocked the whole page from drawing, so when Google was slow
   the site was blank: with a 3s delay on Google's side, text first appeared at
   about 3.4s instead of 0.6s.

   Variable fonts, so one file per style covers every weight and optical size.
   The unicode-range split means a page only downloads the subsets its text
   uses, which on this site is the two latin files.

   Deliberately not preloaded. Measured both ways: a preload made the font
   compete with the stylesheets and delayed the first text by 0.1 to 0.5s,
   while text already shows straight away in the fallback serif (swap).
